Ogre, Ogre, Go Away!

Ogre, Ogre, Go Away!

Wahhhhhh!!

That was the sound of our school yesterday as we stepped outside and drove some scary oni away from our school!

In Japanese, we have a song about throwing beans at the oni, but we made an English version of it:

Ogre go away

Bring me luck today

clickety-clack, clickety-clack

Beans will keep us safe

We will all enjoy it when

The demon sneaks away

Here’s a video of our bean throwing event. The blue and red oni were so scary and made some of us cry, but we did our best to fight them anyway! Thank goodness we told the oni “go away!” and said “鬼は外!福は内!”

It’s good to allow your child to feel feelings of fear and sadness within a safe space. Hopefully everyone was able to learn and grow from their experience. Maybe next year we will all be stronger!

Crafts, Crafts, Crafts… part 1: Oni

Crafts, Crafts, Crafts… part 1: Oni

Our school has been consumed by cardboard!

No, really.

Leading up to Setsubun, we have spent a lot of time creating our own version of oni: masks, puppets, and even full body creations bigger than ourselves!

We successfully warded off the terrible oni with our chants, bean throwing, and bravery.

Now that Setsubun is over, it’s time to take home our crafts and focus on the next event at hand! Coming soon in part 2…
